Listening as an Act of Care: Reflections on Psychology and Singularity

A unified reflection on the importance of psychology in personal life and the practice of care work in institutions.

Listening as an act of care

Psychology matters because it gives voice to the invisible and validates pain. I came to understand that the therapeutic process has phases: sometimes holding, sometimes confronting. Studying psychology means learning to respect the singularity of every story.

That understanding carried over into practice at a shelter home, where I worked with adolescents in vulnerable situations. Just as in my own therapeutic journey, I noticed that care needs to be singular for each of them, respecting their unique stories.

Psychology isn’t a ready-made formula. For every person, with different needs and stories, there is a unique kind of care.
  • Play as a bridge: Using dynamics to support emotional expression and agency.
  • Active listening: The practice of validating pain and helping build life plans.
  • Autonomy as the goal: Clinical practice, whether in an office or a shelter home, aims to give people the tools to find their own path.
